PHNOM PENH: A spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior issued a press release to calm public discord about the possibility of the government requiring a license for those driving motorcycles over 60CC. He said that at present, it is just an idea that is being studied and considered, with no firm timeline.

A statement from August 29, said that the new Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, was reviewing a "Study on Driving Motorcycles over 60CC” and that his comments about it at a ceremony the previous day had been misinterpreted as fact that action was being taken. The statement clarified that at present, the minister is simply reviewing the relevant facts regarding traffic safety. The results of the study will serve as a basis for discussion with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, which has the authority to make decisions and implement driving license laws.

The Ministry of Interior said that things like vehicle type will be considered in addition to engine power in order to implement measures in accordance with the social reality of Cambodia. It said that Sar Sokha's recommendation was a "plan for the future” and that it was out of concern for the well-being of people who have suffered property damage, physical injuries and the loss of thousands lives per year due to traffic accidents alone. It stressed that there is no set timeline for new regulations.
